41st Anniversary of Rhodesia's UDI ...

This November 11 is the 41st Anniversary of UDI. It is also Remembrance Day through the World when we remember those fallen in battle.

UDI was a fateful day in the history of our beloved Rhodesia.

I remember sitting in the Prince Edward School Gymnasium listening to Ian Smith announce the Unilateral Declaration of Independance (UDI) on 11 November 1965.

Apart from loosing numerous school friends in the subsequent hostilities one of the incidents that I remember most clearly is the shooting down of the civilian airliner Viscount ZS-HAT and the subsequent inhuman massacre of many of the survivors.

My Dad was Medical Superintendant of the Salisbury group of hospitals for most of my childhood so there was not much 'action' that we as a family were not aware of.

But that is history now.

You can read the stories of the downed civilian airliner at:

The Deafening Silence
Hunyani
The Huyani Disaster

You can source quite a bit of info about the erstwhile Rhodesia at Rhodesians Worldwide and Rhodesians Worldwide Magazine

To my fallen friends - Charles, Mac and many others we still remember you
