Well June 28 was a pretty big day in my life. After a beautiful drive to Portland we drove directly to our hotel close to the airport. The Embassy Suites Hotel Portland-Airport. After sorting out our baggage off we went to the Oregon Convention Centre where the symposium was held.
The place was humming!. Before we even got to the registration desk Andi had introduced Gigi, John and I to a bunch of her woodturner friends. We were also immediately sidetracked into an exhibition room where there was an interesting triple exhibition on display.
The first was an exhibition of the work of the first Professional Outreach Programme (POP) Merit Award Winners, Giles Gilson, Stephen Hogbin and Mark Lindquist

Traditional Japanese Woodturning
The second was of traditional Japanese woodturning techniques, primarily featuring urishi-ware.

You can download a beautiful pdf catalogue of all these wonderful pieces from the AAW web site (1.2Mb)
Click on the picture to read all about the exhibition
And here is an example of the Japanese bowl that was provided to all the 'Western' artists as their canvas
The Japanese turners were given the opportunity to choose three pieces and the remainder were auctioned
These are the three chosen pieces by:
Mike Lee
Marilyn Campbell and
Jacques Vessery
