Sphere for POP 2008 ...

"A RIDICULE OF RED TAPE"

Here are a couple of images of the piece I'm about to send off to the AAW's "The Sphere" Exhibition and Auction. This is a special exhibit in Richmond, Virginia, USA, titled "The Sphere" will represent the work of more than 50 invited woodturners. These spheres will be part of a silent auction at the Symposium to support future POP events, functions and awards.

This is being held as part of the AAW's Annual Symposium.

The text that goes along with my piece is as follows:

"This sphere comments on the wretchedness of environmental bureaucracy.

At the core of every government environmental department there are passionate and committed souls struggling valiantly to give effect to the noble objectives of numerous international environmental Agreements. Wonderfully, at times, even their political principals share this passion.

The names and acronyms on this sphere are a selection of our key international environmental Agreements, often named after the city in which they were drafted.

Sadly, constraining the full realization of these fine Agreements, are a pestilence of pitiful bureaucrats who know nothing of the environment or environmental Agreements and who tie up their departments in miles of red tape which exhausts the committed professionals and constrains realization of these vital Agreements worldwide.

The somewhat precarious base supporting the sphere reflects on the proximity of the precipice towards which our planet’s life support systems are being propelled."
