Property Centre, Utilitas Building, 1 Dorp Street, Cape Town

The roof garden was the brainwave of Marek Kedzieja of our Directorate Spatial Planning
It was opened by Minister Tasneem Essop on 5 December 2006

This event was a tea was held for the fire marshals responsible for each floor of the building
Rodger Diamond of the Pollution and Waste Department who developed the garden as part of the 2wise2waste programme described the project

The roof air conditioners were all moved on to a tower opening up the remainder of the roof for the garden
The railing was installed and has facilities for climbers/window cleaners to clip on to
The roof was double waterproofed and flood tested before the soil and plants were brought in

The curved path runs out to two artificial steel trees that will be covered by creapers
The airconditioner tower is screened by waste sheets from a bottle cap printing process

All the plants are indigenous
The path planks are all made from recycled plastic
An automatic underground drip irrigation system is installed

Four different local biomes are represented:
Strandveld, Mountain Fynbos, Renosterveld and Succulent Karoo
Planted appropriately from the most sheltered area of the roof to the most exposed area

Some very rare species have been planted and labled

Roger Diamond removing some bugs from one of the crassulas

Milkwood trees (Sideroxylon inerme)

Some or other species of Rhus commonly known as sumac

Aloes and other succulents grow in the rocky succulent karoo
These plants are from the area where we are running the SKEP programme
In the Fynbos biome of the province we run the C.A.P.E. Programme

Tylecodon paniculatus, the botterboom

The creeper is already flourishing and will climb and cover the steel trees very quickly
There will be a table and chairs under the indaba trees
